December 21, 2006. Not Your Typical Christmas Viewing. As most people are scanning the TV guides to find out when their favourite Christmas specials will be on, my attention turns to the less obvious Christmas viewing choices. Here are some movies that take place at or around Christmas that you may not have considered. More. . .
December 18, 2006. The Gallery of Unique Christmas Trees. These days everyone has their standard pine or fir Christmas trees. Why not do something different this year? Here at Dontmindme.com, we've searched to find you a unique sampling of trees to suit your personal style. Take a look through our gallery and pick your favourite to place proudly in your living room. More. . .
November 30, 2006. More New Fall TV Shows. A couple of weeks ago we ran the first part of our annual Good/Bad/Ugly rating of New Fall TV Shows. As it happens, there were too many shows that we wanted to review to fit easily into a single article, so here is the second part. As always, we don't rate a show without watching at least two episodes. More. . .
November 12, 2006. New Fall TV Shows. It's that time again. Every autumn the television networks march out their crop of new shows for the viewing public. Granted, more and more successful shows are launched at other times of the year than ever before, but September and October remain the prime time for introducing new shows to, well, prime time. More. . .
November 6, 2006. I Think I'm a Gnome Now. We've posted a lot of strange material on this site over the last six years. To this point, however, it was all either text or pictures. Today we add another dimension to this site — Flash animation, complete with audio. Be warned, however: if you strongly dislike garden gnomes and/or 1980s pop music, watching this might be a painful experience. On the other hand, if you for some reason take either of those things way too seriously. . . More. . .
October 30, 2006. Wilhelm Award Nominations. Some awards announce all their nominees at some predetermined date not long before the actual winners are announced. Here at Dontmindme.com we do things a little differently. At random times throughout the year we announce nominations for various categories of awards. This is one of those times. More. . .
October 15, 2006. Misdaventures In Marketing. Everywhere you go, you are faced with advertising. In one form or another, someone wants to sell you something, whether it be a product, a service, or an idea. Here at Dontmindme.com we want to promote awareness of what the true message of certain advertisments actually might be. More. . .
September 11, 2006. Five Years Later, or The Real Truth About 9/11. I clearly remember that morning five years ago. I had been home sick for several days and was sleeping in, and was awakened to the news of what had transpired in New York and Washington. At first I was sure it was fiction, like the old War of the Worlds broadcast, but before long it became obvious that this was entirely too real. More. . .
August 9, 2006. The Emperor's New Shoes. Are you familiar with the tale of the Emperor's New Clothes? In case you aren't, it goes like this: two swindlers convince a particularly vain ruler to buy clothing from them which is made from a most wondrous fabric which is not only very beautiful but cannot be seen by those who are stupid or unfit for their jobs. More. . .
July 18, 2006. Twenty Five Signs You've Chosen a Bad Doctor. No one likes going to the doctor, apart from severe hypochondriacs. Between the poking and prodding and the taking your pants off for no good reason and the backless johnny shirts it's just not a fun experience. And of course there's the waiting. More. . .
June 4, 2006. Wilhelm Award Nominations (June 2006). Some awards announce all their nominees at some predetermined date not long before the actual winners are announced. Here at Dontmindme.com we do things a little differently. At random times throughout the year we announce nominations for various categories of awards. This is one of those times. More. . .
May 26, 2006. Absurdity in Infantwear. Children love Winnie the Pooh. I did when I was a child, although now I'm not sure what exactly is so loveable about a bear with an ill-fitting shirt who persistently misspells the word honey. Like many well loved characters, Winnie is well merchandised. My son has all manner of Pooh-related items, many of them gifts from friends and family. More. . .
May 7, 2006. Things to Do at the Airport. The airplane is one of the most significant inventions of the 20th century, and the development and accessability of air travel in general has made vast changes to how all of us live our lives. The opportunities to travel the world in comfort and safety, and with unprecedented swiftness have never been greater. So it's quite ironic that airports are one of the only places where you are almost guaranteed a long wait. More. . .
April 15, 2006. Evolutionary Thoughts, Part I. Do you remember when the media used to report events without slant or bias? Yeah, I don't remember it either. I'm not even sure that was ever the case. It certainly wasn't the case this week when it was announced that scientists had discovered fossilized remains of a creature dubbed Tiktaalik roseae that resembles a cross between a fish and a crocodile. More. . .
March 21, 2006. Ah, Blarney. I must look like a very approachable person. All through my life, I have always had people, usually complete strangers, who felt the need to tell me whatever weird thought was going through their heads. Sometimes it had to do with the weather, or being on an elevator, or a specific holiday, like today, St. Patrick's Day. More. . .
March 16, 2006. Winter Olympic Sports (Ice). Way back in 2002, we ran a series of Good/Bad/Ugly ratings of winter olympic sports. We didn't complete the series, however. There was a rating for snow sports, and one for sliding (aka track) sports, but the rating for ice sports never did get written. At least, not until now. It's taken four years, and the Olympics were over weeks ago, but finally this series will be complete. More. . .
March 7, 2006. 2006 Academy Awards Speed Rating. In what's become a tradition here at Dontmindme.com, it's time for the annual speed rating of the Academy Awards. No in-depth analysis, just quick reactions and comments. I'm not going to say who said what, because there's just too much to go through. Hold on for the ride. More. . .
February 13, 2006. Why I'm Not a Spy. Last summer my husband and I decided to start watching Alias. We had never seen any of it and thought we'd check it out. With the availability of whole seasons on DVD, it was easy entertainment. It was also addictive entertainment — We watched four season of spy-drama in one summer, sometimes cramming three or four episodes into an evening. (I still have no idea where we found that kind of down-time). More. . .
February 1, 2006. Wilhelm Awards 2006. It's hard to believe that an entire year has passed since we introduced the Dontmindme.com Wilhelm Awards. A lot has happened in the last 12 months, and there are a lot of things and people which are, if not very, at least moderately deserving of a Wilhelm Award. Some of the winners were formally nominated during the last year, while others are now for the first time being mentioned in association with this prestigous prize. More. . .
January 11, 2006. Let Billy Come Over. Most people are probably familiar with the children's game of Red Rover. In case you aren't, or you need a refresher, I'll explain it. Two teams line up and face each other at a reasonable distant apart. Each team holds hands and in turn, calls someone over from the other team. The called person runs full force at the opposing line. More. . .
