A few years ago I started using Google's Gmail service for most of my personal email. It boasts a wealth of features, excellent speed, and a very clean interface, and the price is right — it's free. There is one catch, however. Gmail displays advertising to the right of the screen when you are reading your email. Context sensitive advertising. At least, it's supposed to be context sensitive. Check out this screen shot taken from my Gmail earlier this evening. It's from an email thread about, well, the advertising should suggest the topic. At least, the first two ads do. It's the third advert (the highlighted one) which seems jarringly out of place.

Ultimately, I'm not even sure how to interpret that. Do you want to make your dog cease and desist from eating poop in the very near future, or merely make sure he doesn't consume the excrement too swiftly? And what on earth does this have to do with a lobster dinner?
I guess ultimately the price for "free" email is advertising that on occassion is just ever so wrong. It's up to you if that's too high a price, or if the unintentional humour is a value added bonus.
