This Week At Dontmindme.com — July 22, 2001

by Marko Peric

I'm seriously thinking of changing Stuff of the Week into Stuff of the Month, that way I'll be able to feature more stuff every time, and perhaps be a bit more detailed in my write-ups. And yes, that will give me more time to work on other features. If you have any feelings about this, post 'em on the , or perhaps email me me, whichever you prefer. I thrive on your feedback. If I didn't, I wouldn't have a message board.

Song of the Week: Sugarloaf was a minor 70s pop rock band with only one memorable hit, "Green Eyed Lady." Not the most complex songwriting I've ever encountered, mind you, but very catchy and enjoyable. I can't really think of anything that I can compare it to.

Link of the Week: This is perhaps the strangest thing I have ever encounted on the web. And when I say "perhaps" I mean "by far." It's a shockwave animation that is really, really, really strange. It features a Japanese (I think) song, a singing airplane, a clip from the Red Green Show, hands making rude gestures, and the disembodied head of Colin Mochrie. And that's only in the first 30 seconds. This thing runs almost four minutes, so on a dial-up connection it's going to take a while to load. The first time I watched it I found it strange and disturbing, but now it's just very funny.

Fun Fact of the Week: Every single three letter .com address has been registered, and quite probably every .net and .org one as well. I checked the availability of dozens, and not obvious ones either, I was checking stuff like jzq and xkq and fkb.

DVD of the Week. One thing that really ticks me off is finding out about special editions of DVDs after I've purchased the regular edition. This happened to me recently with The Princess Bride. It's one of my favourite movies, and when I saw it at Walmart for $17.88 I couldn't pass it up. Alas, the DVD is all but bereft of added features, which is probably why there is a special edition coming out in September. I'm sure I'll eventually end up buying it. Of course, in the mean time I can enjoy my standard edition.
