This Week At IDC — June 3, 2001

by Marko Peric

Song of the Week: I was listening to U2's Zooropa album last week (which is really a lot better than many people think), and was really grabbed by the title track. Now, I had always enjoyed "Lemon," "Numb," and "Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car," but this was the first time that "Zooropa" had caught my ear. With lyrics like "Zooropa, a bluer kind of white, Zooropa, it could be yours tonight" and "Don't worry baby, it'll be alright, you're got the right shoes to get you through the night," the song is, well, weird, and perhaps best described as reminiscent of a semi-lucid cab ride home late at night.

Link of the Week: On-line comics are cool. Lately I discovered Sluggy Freelance. To give you an idea what this is about, the central character is Torg, who runs a freelance web design business out of his apartment, well, he did until recently, now his former secretary, a shape-changing alien named Aylee is running the business. Aylee's secretary is Gwynn, the former girlfriend of Riff, Torg's best friend. Riff is an inventor, but his inventions generally don't work right, such as the time he sent Torg and Zoe (who lives next door, and who Torg is in love with, and who has a tattoo that causes her to change into a camel), back in time. And I haven't even talked about Torg's pet rabbit who has a running feud with Santa Claus and is now the Easter Bunny since he killed the previous Easter Bunny. If I haven't scared you yet, go check it out. You might want to look at the new readers guide.

Fun Fact of the Week: Before he was famous as Sting, Gordon Sumner used to work as an English teacher and a ditch digger.

DVD of the Week: There's not much on the disc for extra features, but the movie is so cool that I had to make The Game the disc of the week. If you haven't seen this movie, just keep in mind that it's directed by David Fincher, who brought us Fight Club and Se7en, and although this is nowhere near as extreme as either of those two flicks, it's still going to be way too much for a lot of people. A great movie if you're looking for a mental trip.
